On the existence of shortest directed networks

چکیده
A directed network connecting a set A to a set B is a digraph containing an a-b path for each a ∈ A and b ∈ B. Vertices in the directed network not in A ∪ B are Steiner points. We show that in a finitely compact metric space in which geodesics exist, any two finite sets A and B are connected by a shortest directed network. We also bound the number of Steiner points by a function of the sizes of A and B. Previously, such an existence result was known only for the Euclidean plane [M. Alfaro, Pacific J. Math. 167 (1995) 201–214]. The main difficulty is that, unlike the undirected case (Steiner minimal trees), the underlying graphs need not be acyclic. Existence in the undirected case was first shown by E. J. Cockayne [Canad. Math. Bull. 10 (1967) 431–450]. Dedicated to Ernie Cockayne on the occasion of his 60th birthday

ALGORITHMS FOR BIOBJECTIVE SHORTEST PATH PROBLEMS IN FUZZY NETWORKS
We consider biobjective shortest path problems in networks with fuzzy arc lengths. Considering the available studies for single objective shortest path problems in fuzzy networks, using a distance function for comparison of fuzzy numbers, we propose three approaches for solving the biobjective prob- lems. The rst and second approaches are extensions of the labeling method to solve the sing...
متن کاملArrival probability in the stochastic networks with an established discrete time Markov chain
The probable lack of some arcs and nodes in the stochastic networks is considered in this paper, and its effect is shown as the arrival probability from a given source node to a given sink node. A discrete time Markov chain with an absorbing state is established in a directed acyclic network. Then, the probability of transition from the initial state to the absorbing state is computed. It is as...
متن کاملA New Algorithm for the Discrete Shortest Path Problem in a Network Based on Ideal Fuzzy Sets
A shortest path problem is a practical issue in networks for real-world situations. This paper addresses the fuzzy shortest path (FSP) problem to obtain the best fuzzy path among fuzzy paths sets. For this purpose, a new efficient algorithm is introduced based on a new definition of ideal fuzzy sets (IFSs) in order to determine the fuzzy shortest path. Moreover, this algorithm is developed for ...
متن کاملSOLVING BEST PATH PROBLEM ON MULTIMODAL TRANSPORTATION NETWORKS WITH FUZZY COSTS
Numerous algorithms have been proposed to solve the shortest-pathproblem; many of them consider a single-mode network and crispcosts. Other attempts have addressed the problem of fuzzy costs ina single-mode network, the so-called fuzzy shortest-path problem(FSPP). The main contribution of the present work is to solve theoptimum path problem in a multimodal transportation network, inwhich the co...
متن کاملFrom kernels in directed graphs to fixed points and negative cycles in Boolean networks
We consider a class of Boolean networks called and-nets, and we address the question of whether the absence of negative cycle in local interaction graphs implies the existence of a fixed point. By defining correspondences with the notion of kernel in directed graphs, we prove a particular case of this question, and at the same time, we prove new theorems in kernel theory, on the existence and u...
